NecroVisioN: Lost Company Introduction:
NecroVisioN is a dark and intense alternate history horror first-person shooter set against the backdrop of World War I. Developed by the Polish studio The Farm 51 and published by 505 Games, the game made its debut on Microsoft Windows on February 20, 2009, with subsequent releases in the United States on May 25, 2009 (published by Aspyr Media) and Canada on August 10, 2009. In February 2010, a prequel titled NecroVisioN: Lost Company was also released.
The story unfolds in 1916 during the midst of World War I, with players assuming the role of Simon Bukner, a young American soldier recently enlisted in the British Army. Beyond the typical battlefield challenges posed by German forces, Simon soon encounters supernatural adversaries, including vampires, demons, and zombies, spanning various eerie locations from the World War I battlefields to hidden laboratories and mysterious caverns. The primary backdrop is the grim Battle of the Somme, where rumors of a mysterious infection triggering zombie-like transformations abound. Later in the game, players venture into two additional unsettling realms: the subterranean domain of vampires and the infernal realm of Hell.
Gameplay:
The game kicks off with Simon being roused from slumber by a British soldier in a bunker, signaling the start of a counterattack against German lines. Following a motivating speech by their commanding officer, Simon's squad advances towards their objective but is swiftly ambushed by heavy German gunfire and mustard gas. In the chaos, many comrades perish, and Simon desperately seeks shelter from the onslaught. Eventually, he collapses.
Upon awakening, Simon finds himself in another bunker, surrounded by corpses and a lone surviving British soldier who claims to have sealed the bunker to keep threats out, even his own squad members trying to escape the gas. Simon, visibly angered by the soldier's perceived cowardice, engages in a tense confrontation that culminates in Simon taking the soldier's rifle. This grim encounter weighs heavily on Simon, forcing him to confront the harsh realities of war.
As Simon breaks through the barricade, he navigates the treacherous trenches and encounters fellow soldiers initially thought to be suffering from shell shock due to the horrors of war. However, it becomes evident that these individuals have been transformed into zombies, hell hounds, and other unearthly entities from another dimension.
Approaching a trench, Simon confronts a demonic visage that speaks of him as a potential savior in the ongoing chaos. This entity represents one of the last surviving vampires, a mystic race opposing the demons. Simon becomes increasingly suspicious of the sinister forces at play in the trenches as he unravels fragments of information along his journey. This ultimately leads him to Jonas Zimmerman, the mastermind behind the nightmarish events unfolding.
The player's odyssey takes them through trenches, ancient ruins (where Zimmerman's deceit is first encountered), and finally, the fortified stronghold where Zimmerman is believed to be hiding. In the basement laboratory of this stronghold, the player discovers a remarkable mechanized walking tank created by the vampires. Simon commandeers this formidable weapon, setting the stage for a climactic showdown with Zimmerman, who controls a massive Scorpion-shaped walking tank of his own.
Following Zimmerman's defeat, Simon becomes the bearer of the Shadow Hand, housing the spirit of Menthor, an ancient Vampiric champion. This glove was the source of Zimmerman's power over the undead and is now Simon's tool in battling the demonic forces lurking deep underground. Menthor accompanies the player, offering guidance and instructions on the game's spell system. The primary objective becomes clear: confront the formidable demon known as Mephisto. Simon embarks on a journey into a subterranean Vampire realm infused with steampunk aesthetics, now tainted by the corruption of demons.
Final Words:
NecroVisioN is more than just a first-person shooter; it incorporates a close-combat system and allows players to wield dual weapons. The health system relies on limited regeneration, with the option to use health packs or red shards for recovery. Fallen enemies may drop health or mana, which is essential for casting spells. The gameplay is diverse, featuring a combo system, a challenging mode, and story segments where players pilot a Vampire-made robotic exosuit and even ride a dragon.
