Evoland, a role-playing video game released in 2013, was developed and published by Shiro Games. It made its debut on Microsoft Windows and OS X in April 2013, followed by Android and iOS versions in February 2015 and a Linux release in March 2015.

Evoland's core concept revolves around tracing the evolution of video games. Initially, the game starts with just four colors, simple pixelated graphics, and a 2D character. As players embark on their adventure, they gradually unlock new graphics, technologies, and gameplay elements, eventually reaching the HD age and a three-dimensional world. This journey through video game history is punctuated by numerous references to classic role-playing games and movies.

The gameplay in Evoland alternates between action RPG phases reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda and Active-Time Battles similar to those found in Final Fantasy. Players explore a world teeming with dungeons, caves, forests, and villages inhabited by NPCs. After each battle, they collect in-game currency known as Glis, which can be spent in towns to purchase additional items and upgrades, many of which are necessary to complete the game. Besides completing the main story, players can hunt for hidden stars and cards scattered throughout the game world, with the latter being used in a collectible card game inspired by "Triple Triad" from Final Fantasy VIII.

Originally, Evoland was conceived during the 24th Ludum Dare, a rapid video game development competition where participants have 48 hours to create a game based on a given theme. The theme for the 24th Ludum Dare was "Evolution," and Nicolas Cannasse created Evoland in about 30 hours, winning first place out of 1400 participants. The concept behind the game is one that evolves as the player follows the history of RPGs.

Evoland received positive feedback from players, quickly amassing over 300,000 players within a few months. It is still accessible for free on the Evoland website, and the Haxe source code, as is customary in Ludum Dare, was made available on GitHub.

Given the success of Evoland Classic, Shiro Games decided to develop an enhanced version of the game, featuring new bosses, monsters, gameplay styles, full 3D environments, and extended gameplay.

Critically, Evoland received an average rating of 61 out of 100 on Metacritic. Specialist press and websites praised the game's innovative concept, its nods to cinema and video game history, and the seamless integration of various gameplay types. Many critics also noted that nostalgia played a significant role in the game's appeal.
